review 1: I read this, and it pulled me along to the end. That being said, all I can say is that it was OK. I'm not sure whether I just wasn't the audience, or it was a mediocre translation, but it seemed a very odd book, incapable of capturing and holding any one tone. It's broken up into over 100 very short chapters, some of them extremely short, containing only a sentence or two of (sometimes very) tangential relation to the previous chapter about the characters. Sometimes it seemed to want to be a comedy, sometimes a comedy of manners, sometimes a not-comic romance. But it just seemed all over the map. Given that it was nominated for a number of literary prizes, all I can think is that it reads better in French. Or it is a uniquely French novel, that those raised elsewhere are u... morenlikely to "get."Maybe it plays better when you can watch the lovely Audrey Tautou in the lead.
review 2: I would never have picked up this novel on my own. It was chosen by our book group, and I'm so glad I read it. I laughed out loud at the absurdity of the characters' actions and thoughts, knowing that my actions and thoughts are equally preposterous. The movie added some additional dimensions to the plots and to the characters, and was well done. I think it would have been much less enjoyable if you didn't read the book. less
