review 1: As the author himself says - 'Australian history ... was bloody funny'. He's right, it is and this book (which only covers up to Macquarie) draws out many of the humours aspects of our history whilst making some pretty serious points at the same time. Personally I feel the humour is a little forced at times - the stories and personalities are crazy enough without requiring embellishment; but I'd still recommend this highly.
review 2: Humour is often a social lubricant, a temporary cure for depression and a shield to hide introversion. In this case, Hunt uses it like the proverbial spoonful of sugar to help swallow a bitter pill. To me, Australian history was pretty dry and boring, but the author discovered it was actually pretty hilarious (it's always satisfy... moreing to poke fun at the British), so this made learning about the founders of our country pretty easy. I loved his writing style and the snappy chapter titles. Hey...I don't even feel bad about our inauspicious beginnings headed up by a bunch of mongrels! less
