review 1: For some reason, this book is constantly being compared to The Devil in the White City. Having read both books, I just want to say that while The Devil in the White City may have had some more "leaps" and "conjectures" than this well-researched book, the Devil book is a better read. Maybe it is all the French names repeated to fault (either author and editor never heard of pronouns or there are too many players to keep it clear), but it was really hard to follow and not easy to stay engaged with this book. Things about the background of Nazi-occupied France thrown in were sort of interesting, but when the book finally comes to what should be a climax (the trial verdict), the whole thing just deflates like a balloon. I gave it two stars only because I respect the thoroughne... moress of the research.
review 2: It tells the tale of a fascinating & forgotten slice of French World War II history. Unfortunately, it ends up encompassing such a large cast of characters that I simply lost track of who these people were...and I lost any sympathy for them as a result. There are also background chapters that digress into general war information with very awkward transitions. An extremely interesting book in desperate need of some re-editing & re-organizing. less

The first half felt sort of scattered, but once it got to the court case, it seemed clearer.

Fairly interesting but a little anti-climactic at the end.

Very Erik Larson-like.
