review 1: This is actually my first graphic novel, so I don't have much to compare it with, but it's certainly given me something to think about. The plot is a quiet little story about a know-it-all architect and his nondescript life, but that's clearly not the important part here; the story is just a platform for Mr Mazzuchelli to explore deeper times. Asterios Polyp is more about point-of-view and existence—about how we learn about the world around us and how we fit ourselves into the story of the world, already in progress. It's about how we then fit other people into our own lives, or, in some cases, how we fail to do so.The artwork is so seamlessly integrated with all this that I cannot imagine it being conveyed any other way. Mr Mazzuchelli has a bag of tricks—color, textur... moree, and shape—to open little doors and let the attentive reader see things that aren't (and couldn't be) written in words. It's not an important work, but it is an immensely satisfying one, and I'm very glad I picked it up.
review 2: I had high hopes for this critically acclaimed graphic novel. I was disappointed, which invariably happens when I have high hopes for anything. I suspect I'm in the minority on this one.I did like two things, however: (1) the author's use of different fonts and dialogue bubble shapes for the different characters. I've actually never seen it in such stark fashion.(2) the use of red cross hatches for defining the moods of characters like Hana. This doesn't happen often, just in some crucial scenes. That's pretty much it. less
