review 1: I picked up this book because the idea of applying eugenics to a remote town using some sort of secret experiment was interesting enough on its own. I think the book could have stopped there and been great. It is certainly well written. But then.....oh then.......it goes off on some sort of crazy alternate path with absolutely no explanation as to the real source of the problem and loses momentum towards the end and suddenly stops in a slightly unsatisfying way. There are a lot of things going on in this book, a lot of conflicting agendas and mysteries. So its an interesting read. But every so often I would stop and think....wow, this is going a bit far isn't it?
review 2: The premise of this book sounded so interesting, and I couldn't wait to start it. It star
... moreted off with promise, but then the story began to unravel and ultimately I found myself disappointed. When the story took a turn I didn't quite expect, I went with it, but in the end felt the it should have stayed more focused on the concept of Eugenics and not strayed to the supernatural. To me, the idea of a group trying to "cleanse" society is far more frightening than some backwoods monsters. less

Lovecrafty tale that works the eugenics movement into the story, to good effect

The ending was a little abrupt but the story was excellent.
