review 1: Oh man, this book just crumbled at the end for me. I'm up for a good dystopian conspiracy thriller, but this book fell short of that--not enough plausible details for me, and that's leaving out the organic technology of the "good guys" completely. But the book didn't feel like high-minded literature either. So I felt stuck in the middle where I couldn't really get into any aspect of it. The ending felt half-done as well. Other people might like it, but this book wasn't my bag.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this little minx of a novel. Every other review makes comparisons to David Foster Wallace and Pynchon and a little Zadie Smith, and all of that is accurate, but I found WTF far more accessible and playful than any of those authors (brilliant thought they may
... morebe). WTF is far more "setup" than "denouement" or "conclusion," so I kept getting confused at the fact that I was 3/4 of the way through the book and still at the very beginning of the adventure. This might have bugged me if I didn't find the narrative so enticing and the characters so delicious. They are imperfect, highly intelligent, and engaging people, and I genuinely loved all three of their stories (how rare is that?).I'm very glad this book has been getting the buzz it has. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes good characters and a super-readable and engaging narrative. It is not a perfect book, but it got me all excited to read Shafer's next work. He's got a good thing going.I RECEIVED THIS BOOK FROM NETGALLEY IN EXCHANGE FOR MY HONEST REVIEW. less
