review 1: What an interesting book - worth the effort to read if, like me, you were captivated by his writing. I loved Catcher in the Rye in high school, and Franny and Zooey speak to me often. I think what I learned from this book is that what strikes a chord with me in his stories are the questions he has, but that it is a mistake to assume that because he has these questions he has the answers, too. He never found the answers, and was bothered by everyone asking him for them. All he had were questions...the same ones as me, but in a much deeper and wounding sense. Had we met, we would have had nothing to say to one another.

... morecause Salinger dropped off the literary map so to speak and chose a life as a virtual recluse. This book goes a long way in explaining Salinger's professional and personal life choices. What most interested me was that from inception the biography was being done with an accompanying documentary. Which may be why the book didn't quite work for me since most of it reflects the main interviews (from over 100) done by the authors. However, I think it will work much better as a film and it is being shown this month on the PBS American Masters series. Am looking forward to the insights into this American author's works and influence on successive generations of authors. less
