review 1: The worst installment of what so far has been a pleasant series. Truthfuly, the first book was the best and each succeeding book was a little less better. But none of them was this problematic. I found myself skimming whole chapters to get past some of the wordiness.- Too long, or rather, too much 'inner thought' information from every single character as they ruminate over their plans and the personality of every single other character.- Insta romance between Leanna and Bahzell that apparently has been simmering from the other book. What? Complete surprise to me. And I read romance novels.- Even Bigger, badder demons for Bahzell & Co. to fight. - The only good parts were the fights. The rest was boring and frustrating and too much exposition.- Would have liked to h... moreave seen more fall out & reaction to Leanna becoming the only female wind-rider.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoy the War God series, and Weber was obviously thrilled to be back with some old and beloved characters again.Unfortunately, he was more interested in the lives and patterns of old than he was in telling a new story. There were no surprises in this book, far too much foreshadowing and a lot of missed opportunities to develop and bring to the forefront some previously background characters. The first two books progressed, advancing the story and expanding the world while ratcheting up the threat level to the main characters in a steady way. Pretty typical Hero Saga arc, but told in an enjoyable way and I loved it. By the third book, I felt like Weber was losing steam, yet there was still fun to be had.In this book, all Weber seemed to do was make the bad guys bigger. There was no sense of anxiety, no new dimensions added. It felt more like a long epilogue to the third book.It takes a bit to make my eyes glaze over, especially in a War God book, but this one did it. I'm sad that it wasn't as great a leap forward as War God's Own was from the first book. less

Pretty ho-hum. The bantering (such as it was) got on my nerves.
