review 1: This book was so similar to the previous book in the series, I had a hard time telling them apart. Endless detail about troop movements, weapons development, and so many names! Not only are the names warped versions of current names, but characters are often identified by several different terms - titles in various forms, locations, personal names, alternate names. Enough! Yes, there are developments, but they are few and far between. It appears that the author is paid by the word, as this book could have been 1/4 the size, and better for it.Here's hoping the next one in this interminable series is better...
review 2: David is as always a fine story teller who truly makes you care about his characters. Sadly this is slightly lessened in this series by his
... morechoice of names and spelling. In an attempt to show a couple thousand years of language drift, he finds unique ways of spelling the names of every individual in the book. Then sometimes refers to them by their first name, sometimes by the last, sometimes by their title and other times by their rank... all of which keeps you having to refer back to the glossary to figure out who is who in the zoo.I understand what he's aiming for, and he does something similar but without the goofy spelling in the Harrington series. The trouble is, it detracts from the flow of the book. I can track the use of the variations on names in HH series, but it drives my wife NUTS. In this one it's worse. Trouble is he's committed now, and couldn't change in this series if he wanted to. Get a set of bookmarks for the various parts of the Glossary, you'll need it. Doesn't mean you shouldn't read the series, YOU SHOULD, just beware of the issue. less

Technology is winning. I wonder how David Weber feels about the NSA spying program.

I'm not sure why I keep reading this. The good guys never really seemed threatened.
