review 1: This series started off really well with an excellent premise for a series of books. But the author seems to think we need to know the biography and intimate detail of every character we meet (and there are far, far too many of them anyway). The plot is excellent and the only reason I am continuing to plough through it, although I skip most pages looking for something worth reading. In fact I didn't read the previous book because I got fed up with the style of writing and when I started this one found I could work out what had happened in the that massive tome in about three pages of this one. I'm afraid this seems to symptomatic of quite a few authors of this genre these days. Robin Hobb is just as bad and as for the Wheel of Time books..... I call it lazy writing ... moreas its mainly just useless padding but of course also allows the author to produce a book for his agent/publisher with B*****er all plot for its size.Come on start writing stories not rambling, over complicated, padded out mush.
review 2: Another great installment in the "Safehold" series. One thing that I really liked about this book, was that in some ways I found the action really picking up again in this novel and the slow-moving pace of the previous two was pretty much gone. Don't get me wrong, there are still a lot of places in the novel where I think some more inventive pacing could have been used, but there are not as many expositions in this novel as there were in the previous novel. The novel is still very long, but this has never really bothered me much. Slow readers beware though as this could eat up a very large chunk of time, but if you have made it this far in the series then I am sure that you already know that. The battles seem to be moving away from the Naval sphere as the Charisian Navy wipes out any form of a naval threat and is moving more towards the Army/Marine side of the conflict. There are a lot of dramatic changes in the novel, and I was completely taken by some of the plot twists. Also, this novel has some very graphic scenes of capture and torture, and I that kind of stuff bothers you I would suggest skipping the viewpoints of those who have been capture by the "Church of God Awaiting". All in all, I was pleased with the direction this book went in the series, although we are still a very long way away it seems from ever encountering the Gbaba again, or obtaining space flight for that matter. In fact, I am beginning to suspect that this is not a concern of Weber's in this series. less
