review 1: Very good teen story about a girl coping with a mother's death and a dad whose not great at taking responsibility. When the feckless pot smoking dad takes the daughter on a therapeutic road trip and drops her at his mom's house our narrator understandably pitches a fit until she becomes smitten by a handsome boy who seems to be her soulmate. Lots of relationship stuff/ w parents-alive and dead, with grandmother, with peers, with love object. Very good writing, some humor, some cool plant stuff-keeping alive a stolen, one of a kind plant her mother inherited is a big theme. I won't spoil the surprise but it did stick out like a sore thumb to me, but that doesn't diminish the success of the book. Lots of nice, maybe too neat, but still satisfying, growth. Great for kids who... more like realistic fiction.
review 2: Unexpectedly fresh characters and situations make The Last Forever stand out from the pack. This story is about life after losing a parent, the nature of love and the beauty of the everyday people in our lives. So often realistic reads are grim. The Last Forever is believable because it also includes the moments of hope and even fun that can coexist with hardship. It is both realistic and uplifting. less
