review 1: Grace has left her husband and moved to a small seaside town in country Victoria, where she proceeds to raise her three children with - it might be said - varying degrees of success. Now Grace is dying. The three children are summoned to her bedside, particularly the eldest Edie who has shouldered the bulk of the caring for their sick mother. During the course of the book the stories of Grace and her children are laid out. It's a really good yarn about the family dynamic - and from all angles, the children and the mother. You don't have to be an Aussie to like it, but there are one or two expressions that are a very Aussie take on life. The dry sense of humor is evident in even some of the most poignant settings. Thoroughly satisfying and a really good read, particularly h... moreer descriptions of small-town Victoria.
review 2: I had high hopes for this book after reading the trade press. It's a pity there isn't a better rating scale on Good Reads as I liked it more than three stars but not quite four stars - but that's not to do with the book itself. I emotionally respond to books. The greater the emotions they evoke, the more they affect me, the greater the rating. But with this one I had to keep my distance. I started reading this book on the second anniversary of the death of my own mother, so reading about Grace and her cancer - and her family - was a little hard. I must say I enjoyed the writing style of Deborah Forster very much. I loved how she developed her characters, how she let us in to her world, and where she took us. What makes us who we are? Who has a greater impact on our life? Do we ever understand our family and the ones we love? I liked this book but I didn't fall in love with it. And I do love falling in love with the books I read... "The Light Between Oceans" immediately comes to mind. Would I read another book from Deborah Forster? Yes. I think I would. I just had to keep my emotions in check for this one. I cried too much reading the last book (TLBO) and couldn't risk another flood of tears.... less

I found this book engaging and was absorbed. May have something to do with the 'dead mothers club'.
