review 1: I could not get engaged fully with this book. The story just didn't interest me. I would engage occasionally but then lose my focus. The novel jumps from different character's perspectives so maybe I just found some of the portraits more intriguing. Eve, the mother of Izzy, is both pathetic in her passivity and intriguing in how she allows herself to become who she is. Izzy moves from flexible as she attempts to accept her divorced father's (Simon) new situation and her upcoming wedding to extreme irrationality with her mother. Raises the question of many novels: why are mother's blamed for everything? Jack is an author struggling with immaturity who maintains a correspondence with Eve--this correspondence is part of the novel. The two exchange recipes but they are metaph... moreorically related to the personalities. Jack and Eve's relationship and who they are in their relationship are kind of the center of the novel but the novel radiates out from them into their dysfunctional lives. It's kind of a love story and kind of a growing up story if you can talk about 50 year old people growing up. . .
review 2: I'm on a love letter kick this month, maybe it's my husbands remote shift work (we text a lot) who knows. Anyways this was a lovely novel I thought would be boring but wasn't. The writing was clear and uncluttered, kind of a relief after my urban fantasy and steampunk kick. Clear summer days picking plums, short walks for great coffee - all lovingly and freshly described. The gem of it for me was how each character had to sort out what actually made them happy. What should, or what will were discarded as they write back and forth. It's meant for the over 50 crowd I think, but I got a lot out of it. PS The ending line was so unexpectedly snappy - I just loved it! less
