review 2: I really enjoyed this book, even though most of the book has a sad tone. Yes it is a vocabulary builder, but that is what my Kindl
... moree with built in dictionary and links to wikipedia was created to handle! Although anachronistic (vocabularly builder word!) to read a book entitled "The Bookstore" on a Kindle, I enjoyed clicking on a link to find out about all the modern artists that Esme, a Ph.D candidate in Art Histtory at Columbia refers to as she tells her story. The fact that someone so smart could be so dumb at love to fall for the completely feckless Mitchell is a nice character anaylsis - and reminds us that none of us has it all figured out. I'm glad that Esme has some real friends and that she has found real support among them contrasted to the very artificial world that the uber-wealthy Mitchell has manufactured complete with horrible parents and a long list of bimbos he chases. I especially liked Luke and George from the bookstore and Stella, lesbian photographer neighbor. I would like to see their stories go on in another book. The ending of this book is not chick-lit in that it is vague, but somehow you know that Esme and her baby girl Georgie will make it. less

I could never believe in the love story because the guy’s actions didn’t make sense. So, meh.

New York, old bookstore, scholarship and art... What not to love? But then, life happens.
