review 1: An enjoyable read, but something about the style of language meant I found it quite difficult to get in to the story - I was always stumbling over sentences that I found jarring or that were repeatedly following exactly the same patterns (to the point where the repetition became a bit annoying). review 2: Unique among the fantasy I've read in that the crux of the story is a personal journey as opposed to a world in peril or a rising darkness or some such. Wouldn't describe the plot as being incredibly fantasy focused (no really heavy supernatural/magical component that I could see) the fantasy is more of an aesthetic thing which is used to incorporate the element of prejudice which leads back to the aforementioned court politics. The structure which alternates between the present & flashback works for the most though there are some flashback chapters that are weaker than others. But by & large it's an interesting character driven journey with a healthy smattering of action. less

It was enjoyable. It had a slow start, but it finished on a high.
