review 1: This book was not for me. It simply did not hold my interested. I wouldn't have picked it up had it not been a book club selection. It sounded like it had potential to be interesting. It told of the creation of the town of Oakridge Tennessee in 1942. It's secret purpose was enriching uranium for the atomic bomb. Women were brought there to work without knowing what they were signing up to do. They were only told that they would be doing work that would help end the war.I think it is was not as interesting to me because there was more focus on the setting than on the women. In the Goodreads description, the book was compared to "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks". While they both dealt with history and science, this book was missing the part where the characters... more come to life. The author tried to give many perspectives which obviously took a lot of work but the end result was too many people to keep track of and no one that you really go to know in depth. Perhaps also, historical nonfiction is not my favorite type of nonfiction.
review 2: Fascinating book. I like the way the author juxtaposed the lives and jobs of the workers at Oak Ridge with the activities of the Manhattan project and the science of developing the bomb. The book provides a very good picture of what life was like at Oak Ridge and the atmosphere of WWII; we're total softies today compared to them. Contrary to some reviewers, I found the Oak Ridge workers described in the book very real. I was also pleased that the author discussed women scientists who were not credited for their contributions. less

Maybe more a 3 3/4. I wish this was a 10 point scale as I'm oftentimes I between numbers.
