review 1: This is a non-fiction story about the plant in Oak Ridge TN where they worked on tubealloy for the Atomic Bomb during WW2. Specifically this is about the untold story of the women who worked were recruited to this secret military facility. It is quite an interesting story. This talks about the way that the Oak Ridge plant tied into the New Mexico test site and focuses on the young women who were lured by good jobs, but had no idea what they were working on. We also learn about the accomplished women scientists who contributed and assisted.I have recently been watching the TV series "Manhattan" - which focused on the New Mexico test site part of the Manhattan Project, so it was interesting to read about the other side and also filter in the true parts to the TV parts. I'... morem not sure if the TV show helped my understanding or hindered me.In the end, this is a fascinating story. The idea of such a huge scale project, completely in secret with such huge consequences is impossible to imagine today. Much of the foundation of this book focuses on the compartmentalization of the process: the ways in which no one knew more than the one part they were assigned and how absolutely everything was top secret. I was only slightly disappointed because I felt that I never got fully invested in the characters, and while it almost read like a novel - it also felt to my mind that it kept building, only to come to an end. Still, a fascinating story and one that I am thankful to have read, as well as one that will stick with me.
review 2: A large amount of information is included in this book and it took me quite a while to read it. Some of it made sense to me; some of it didn't. The stories of the women who worked at Oak Ridge were very interesting but I wanted to know more about them so that they would feel like real people to me. Considering the number of people who brought Oak Ridge into existence, then worked on "The Project" during World War II, there are probably many more stories out there worth telling. The question is, will they be told since the workers themselves didn't really know what they were doing? less

Fascinating description of the city and the science, but weak on the character development
