review 1: For a first novel, this was incredible. Tightly written with memorable characters, we had the pleasure of hosting Dennis at our book club meeting this month. A very well- read young man, he writes with confidence about the plight of human tragedy and how individuals choose to deal with misfortune and grief. Henry is a mailman who accidentally sets fire to a neighborhood, killing a young wife, burning down two homes, and damaging two others. While this was an accident, Henry is guilt-ridden and will do anything to help out those who were affected, including putting his own life in danger to help Sam build a log cabin in the woods, build a treehouse for two boys, and take in two elderly sisters who lost their home and all their possessions in the fire. Dennis gives each c... moreharacter a different way to deal with this tragedy...sadness fear, hatred, sorrow, morning and each reaction rings true. Really great read!
review 2: Dennis Mahoney has written an incredibly emotional story about the lives of people affected by a neighborhood fire. It begins when a mailman lights a cigar and accidentally tosses a lit match on the ground. Throughout the story, there seems to be a vague tension building which keeps you glued to the pages. The author has a beautiful way with words. I hope the success of the book encourages him to remain focused on his craft. less
