review 1: This book won the 2013 New Bloody Dagger and is nominated for a 2014 Barry and Macavity for best first mystery. Sheldon Horowitz is an 82 year old Jewish Korean War veteran who recently lost his wife and has moved to Norway with his granddaughter and her Norwegian husband. Sheldon suffers from dementia or the like and has many demons from his past, the biggest of which is the death of his son in the Vietnam War. Sheldon gives refuge to an upstairs neighbor and her young son, who appears to be the victim of domestic violence but which is in reality much, much more. The story takes us through Sheldon's past as he flees with this young boy. This is a very compelling story. The narration and dialogue are fabulous. At times when Miller tells us the back story, it can dra... moreg on a bit. Definitely recommended, especially if you like foreign locales and history.
review 2: Sheldon Horowitz is a veteran for whom the Korean War is not entirely over. His granddaughter believes, as his wife did before her, that he is suffering from dementia and moves him to Oslo where he is even more of a misfit. When a woman is killed in their apartment building, Sheldon goes on the run to protect her young son from a very nasty killer. Tracking them is police inspector Sigrid Odegard. The plot is satisfyingly complex and she, like Sheldon, is a beautifully developed character. I wouldn't mind if this were the start of a series. less

This is a really fun book to read. It's probably more of a thriller than it is "literary fiction."

Not bad. It would make a decent movie. I'm thinking Dustin Hoffman as Sheldon.
