review 1: A revenge porn book, a pair of teenage sisters slice and dice their way through the bad guys of their community and a torturous and murderous spree. Enjoyable for the empowerment of a typically less empowered portion of the population (young, African-American, working class girls). I was a little bored by the blossoming heterosexual expression though (happens in so many stories, and no obviously LGBT people in the series yet).
review 2: This is a book about adolescent murderesses and it is a book about doorways to other worlds and it's about sisters growing up and it's about first love. How can a book be about this many things and still be WONDERFUL, you ask? Slice of Cherry is bizarre, dark, violent, funny, heart-breaking, uplifting, and optimistic. Things to
... morelove:The surprising older/younger sister dynamic. While Fancy initially appears to be the level-headed moral compass of the two, trying to keep her older wilder sister Kit out of trouble, their relationship is actually way more complicated. These girls are monsters. They kill people. But they're also heroes.YA lit where the parents are important and aren't totally absent!Growing up isn't about loss of innocence (these girls are NOT innocent); it's about taking responsibility.Fancy and Ilan are MARVELOUS together--romantic and sad and realistic and also totally wacky. Seriously, I've never read a book so full of blood and optimism. less

It was a little gruesome, but nice magical realism.
