review 1: Another really helpful book from Diana Butler Bass. A church historian by training, she has also become something of a futurist as she uses her experience in analyzing the trends of the past to give her readers a clear view of the present and a hint of what may be coming. In this book, she focuses on the "Great Awakenings" that have characterized Western Christianity and expands on the notion that a fourth Awakening began in the 60's. She demonstrates how that movement was derailed by Nativists, exemplified by the Reagan Revolution, and hypothesizes that the Awakening has now resumed. What will be the result for the Church? Well, it's likely to be as different on the other side as it was after Wesley, Azusa, etc...
review 2: A very important book looking a
... moret the past, the present, and the future of Christianity in the world, and especially in the United States. A lot of people seem to have focused attention on the first section of the book, in which Bass describes the decline in Christian churches in the last half-century, but the most important part of the book is the look at the future. In this section, Bass writes of a new spiritual awakening that leaves behind the trappings of the past, in which Christians equated faith with belief, and moves toward the concept of faith being a matter of the Spirit. There is much for thoughtful Christians to ponder here. less

I highly recommend the author's distillation of sociology, American religious history, and theology.

Excellent book. Gives a good view of what is happening right now in both religion and spirituality.

So far, not so much informative as it is affirming.
