review 1: I'm not sure what I think of this book, actually. I certainly related to the sudden changes a new baby makes to her mother's (and father's) life: the wonder of breastfeeding, the mountains of laundry, the lack of sleep, the desire to stay home.What is a mystery to me is how this new first-time mom could leave, or take, her baby to enter into dangerous settings if the story is meant to be any kind of serious read. I realize a cozy mystery leaves out the gore in the narrative, but I cannot buy into a story that leaves the reader so uncomfortable about this young woman trying to be a sleuth so eary after childbirth.I do have the other books on order from the library, so I will at least read the next one to see whether things become more believable and comfortable for me as ... morethe reader. What I'm hoping is that I do not follow my first inclination to call this a fantasy cozy, or some such term.
review 2: This was a cute, if predictable, foray into the genre of chick lit. I've read mysteries where the heroine/investigator runs a coffee shop, a bakery, a catering service, an antique store, a winery but stay-at-home mom is a first. That being said, the reason I like the others is that I get to glean tips and trivia about the topics (other than crime) that interest and occupy the protagonist. Motherhood, I know about. I know that it's hard to get any sleep with a newborn. I know those last few pregnancy pounds take far longer to lose than you imagined. I know that some days, just getting dressed was an achievement. So I do miss those little surprising tidbits in the story that make me go, "Oh, I didn't know that!" or "That's a good recipe/craft tip/description of a place I've never been."Entertaining, but not a must-read. less
