review 1: This was a nice read. Joy Harkness is a divorced, middle-aged college professor in Manhattan who decides quite impetuously to change her life by accepting a teaching position at Amherst College and purchasing a run down Victorian house. Joy is unfortunately named–her life is quiet, orderly and spare. She has few close personal attachments and she seems to like it that way–until she moves to the country, where she is slowly enveloped in the warmth of friendships, the quiet satisfaction of making a home your own, and even a love affair or two. Joy’s transformation is a joy to read about!
review 2: I actually purchased this book at my local Dollar Tree to use in a craft project, but I picked a book that sounded like I might be able to read through it first.
... more Turns out I LOVE this book! And now want to go purchase more copies to send to friends and family that love books... or that are going through difficult periods of life, especially of the (seemingly) permanently single variety. It resonated with me, as I'm sure it will many readers. less

One of the best books I have read in a while. Medicine for my soul.

3.5 stars. Uneven, but great in spots.
