review 1: Of Windmills and War is a historical fiction novel which starts out prior to WWII and ends with the end of WWII. It gives a different perspective on WWII than I had read before since it portrays what happened in the Netherlands during WWII. The novel begins with a focus on 2 sons in the McLain family, Joey and Danny. Joey is the first to join the military right out of high school before America has gotten involved in WWII. He is badly injured in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and eventually Danny leaves college to become an Air Force pilot. As a boy, Danny had become pen pals with a Dutch boy named Hans. When Hans dies in a skating accident, Danny and Hans' younger sister Anya resume the pen pal connection. Their correspondence stops with the invasion of Hollan... mored by Germany but connect again when Danny's bomber plane is shot down during a bombing raid and he ends up on the ground in the Netherlands. Anya has become involved with the Dutch Resistance. The novel presents a vivid portrayal of life in the Netherlands during WWII and the bravery and courage of those who both helped hide Jews and then helped Allied soldiers back to safety. It gave me a new perspective on how harsh life was for so many in that country in addition to the atrocities against the Jews. There is a Christian message woven into the novel but is definitely not a 'preachy' novel.
review 2: I normally don't like WWII books but this one just caught my eye and I'm really glad I picked it up! It started out slow but it really picked up about a 1/3 of the way through. Heartbreaking at times, suspenseful at others. Love stories like these don't come around often but when they do, they're well worth it. I enjoyed the nontraditional way the characters met and became friends. I learned about a part of the war that not many have heard about. The end made my heart melt. What more could one ask for in a storyline? less

The writing was a bit simplistic at times, but the story itself was interesting.
