review 1: Creepy and Maud is the story of two troubled, isolated teenage neighbours whose bedroom windows face each other. Creepy is a loner with eccentric tendencies, and Maud suffers from a mental illness which culminates in her systematically pulling her hair out. Both teenagers' parents have thoroughly dysfunctional relationships with each other and their offspring. Creepy's parents' relationship is just terrible, with domestic violence commonplace. The novel is well written, and despite its dark themes, is told with an element of dry humour. It is interesting that neither 'Creepy' nor 'Maud' are the characters' real names.I would recommend this book to older teenagers, or those who are interested in themes of isolation and mental illness.
review 2: I hate to can th
... moree CBC Short List but I wonder how this book made it. It's a sour negative story of family disfunction and adolescent anxiety, and I haven't identified any 'blackly funny' passages in all of it's tortuous 202 pages. There is a cloying and self mocking pretension by the author to use quotes from famous people at the beginning of each chapter, for reasons unknown. They do not relate in any way to the story, which might have been better re-edited to an adult audience. If you aren't depressed at the start of this book, you have a fair chance of being not only depressed at the end, but angry at the waste of time. less
