review 1: This is by far one of my favorite zombie genre books! I wasn't sure what to expect, but once I got started, I could not put it down. The book has just the right amount of description as far as weapons and such are concerned. The book isn't bogged down with tactical speak, so it was not a hard read. The main character is a nice guy, who learns quick that things aren't so nice in the world anymore. I like the fact that he is ex-military, too. They will be surviving, too, dear readers, and will have a higher chance, probably, than a regular Joe, so don't knock him. I don't know what a few of the reviewers were talking about, because I liked him, and I liked Rachel. So, all in all, I liked this series very much and cannot wait to read the other volumes out t... morehere.
review 2: Heaven help me, I liked this book.It felt to me quite a bit like reading a really great first draft that was in need of some substantive content editing and a more thorough proofread. There were cliches aplenty, which made sense when I considered the perspective it was written from, but made me stop and say "oh, geez, come on now" often. I face-palmed a lot. But I kept on reading. The main character I found to be pretty irritating, but at least he had reasons for being as capable during the apocalypse as he was. The sidekick didn't, and there were tons of face-palmey lines that related to her. I still liked her, though, moreso whenever the story was told from her perspective instead of his.The pacing was crazy fast, sometimes a bit too fast. (Those times were usually broken up by me when I would stop and tell the book it was being too cliche. I talked to the book. Means I liked it.) It isn't bogged down by excessive descriptors and is certainly a good representation of what the main character would notice. All in all, I'm not sad I spent the time to read it. I do hope that in the future, this author's work gets a little more editorial attention. I don't think I will be finishing the series, but it could very well be just what a person is looking for if they would like fast pacing, survivalist and definitely-not-zombies themes, and if the reader isn't overly conscious of and bothered by obvious tropes or moderate copy-editing issues. less

Really liked it, a little heavy on the "army" talk and explanations, but a good story nonetheless
