The Forbidden Library
review 1: Grades 4-7 - This fantasy tale by Djano Wexler tells the tale of Alice, whose forced to live with her Uncle Geryon after her father’s ship goes down in a storm. She’s never heard of this uncle and doesn’t know what to expect when she arrives at his mansion. Uncle Greyon is a mystery to Alice. The only instructions she is given is to avoid the library. Denied access to the library and left to her own devices; Alice meets a talking cat named Ashes and Isaac, a boy that challenges Alice to open a book from the forbidden library. Giving into temptation Alice picks up a book and realizes that she is now trapped inside the book and must fight her way out. Along the way Alice learns about the secrets that surrounded her father and the truth about Uncle Geryon. Alice questio... morens everything she has been told and has to turn to herself to figure out everyone’s motive. Readers will enjoy the elements of mystery in the novel. Each chapter filled with cliff hangers and beautiful illustrations that help to tell the story. This tale is very reminiscent of tales such as Inkheart and Coraline. It’s clear that Wexler is a genius when it comes to creating inventive worlds with interesting creatures. Readers will enjoy this new fantasy series about Alice, a bibliophile who cannot resist the urge to read books that literally take her to new and wondrous places.
review 2: Brilliant, fast-paced, action-packed - but those words are too common to do justice to Wexler's creativity and his heroine Alice's brave escapades. In short this was a refreshing middle grade fantasy adventure - the Library itself is much darker and more sinister than I had anticipated, and that made me love it more. Reminiscent of Neil Gaiman's Coraline in Wexler's flair for the darker side of portal adventures, but totally original in every other way. Alice is a delightfully bold and exciting heroine and I cannot wait to see her again! less

While not as textually rich as Inkheart, it was an enjoyable read.
