review 1: Warrior and conquerer returns from battlefield and needs some relaxation (that means sex). So he goes to a whorehouse to enjoy the spoils of war. But it is not a whore who holds his interest, but a mere servant boy. Of course this does not stop the warrior. He simply takes what he wants. That was the one ting that made me uncomfortable. Apparently it does not matter if your a whore...if you work in a whorehouse you are up for grabs. But of course it does not matter in the end. They fall madly in love and everything works out fine. Is this a believable story? OF COURSE NOT!!!! Does that matter????? Not for me. That's why I give this short book 4 stars. Because I had fun, not because it was realistic.
review 2: I feel like it's wrong to like a story about a 19-ye... morear-old serving boy, Cale, forced to serve as a courtesan to a lord, Darren Kaine, except Cale isn't exactly unwilling and Darren is no brute. I've read all of Frost's books, and this one might be my favorite. The mythical fantasy world here sprawls out like a medieval kingdom brimming with fires, battles, poisons, and castles. Cale and Darren (not a very fantastical name, that) move to an intricate dance laced with suspicion but edging into trust. I'm not gonna lie; this was a pretty raunchy read. There were very subtle elements of dub-con, but only initially. The assassination plot wasn't a particular surprise, nor did it work as a mystery. It was just an element in the dance between Darren and Cale. Both Darren and Cale need to learn to trust. And Darren has to realize that to keep Cale he has to let him go. I do wish this had been longer. I would have gladly read more about this world and these two men. less
