review 1: At first I didn't really enjoy the flashbacks that this book contained, but once I realized what they were for I was in love! I really wish this would be turned into a movie, but that doesn't happen often with prequels. If you enjoyed Savages, you need to pick this book up. It gives you so much more insight and it may shock you. Part of me almost wishes that I didn't read it so I can experience it for the first time all over again.
review 2: This prequel to Savages is a tightly woven novel explaining the connections the characters from Savages have with one another--never wordy, filled with local color and for the most part authentic-sounding dialog. There is one glaring error, however, that really was annoying. Anyone who grew up in a SoCal beach town knows
... morethat PCH is always simply "PCH"--it's never referred to as, THE PCH. It's ok to say "the 405" or "the I-10", but when the author writes "the PCH" all sense of authentic local color is lost. Pacific Coast Highway is just that--a highway that connects the beach towns, which we travel constantly, going to school, doctor appointments, shopping, visiting family and friends--and of course going to the beach. less

Got a bit too cool for me, but still a fun beach read.
