review 1: Je ne suis pas très amateur des romans policiers en général, mais j'ai trouvé celui-ci très bien fait. Les personnages sont bien développés et crédibles. Et j'aime le parler coloré des hicks américains (évidemment, il faut le lire en anglais, je n'ose pas imaginer ce que le traducteur français a pu faire des dialogues).Ce genre d'histoire contient souvent des coïncidences ou des rebondissements invraisemblables, mais Donald Ray Pollock est un écrivain trop intelligent pour user de ce procédé (sauf peut-être un peu vers la fin, mais je n'en dis pas plus).
review 2: 2.5 stars, rounded down for overkill (almost literally!).My overall feeling of this book is "desperate and depressing" but that's exactly what Mr. Pollock intends his readers to feel,... more I think. You can almost see the predestined path the various characters are bound to take just based on their life circumstances. Unfortunately, the characters (near-universally creepy, emotionally damaged, murderous, skanky, or all of the above) are believable. The confluence of events... perhaps not quite as much. But one can forgive the abundance of coincidence given the quality of the prose. I almost gave this book three stars. A lack of balance is what knocked a half a star off the top. This gritty novel had the capacity for (if not happiness per se) at least poignancy by providing glimpses of hope, or by making the few "good times" brighter. Mr. Pollock chose to not take that path; perhaps it would have made the story less powerful. But without that glimmer to offset the dark it fell a little short for my taste. less
