review 1: I became curious about Joan Crawford when I saw the movie Mommie Dearest. I had heard some of the hype about her being this horrible adoptive parent and only thought she had the two children, Christina and Christopher. Being an adoptive parent myself, I am always interestedin the dynamics of adoptive families. After reading this book and dooing further research/investigation, I believe Christina's account may be somewhat over the top BUT something DID indeed impact her and Christopher. The son completely disengaged from the family and Christina disconnected as well? What happened? The twins painted a different picture. They kept stressing she was a strict disciplinarian...what did that mean in the 40s and 50s? I know what it meant in the 60s when I was born. In looking at ... morethe pictures in the book Joan was a striking young woman, as she got older she began to look scary to me. The need and desire for love was apparent throughout the book. The book read like a very thorough resume. The part that really interested me was the part about the children and her marriage to Mr. Steele and the work she did for Pepsi Cola. I now am interested in seeing some of the movies she actually starred in...
review 2: I was really interested in this book because I'm fascinated by Joan Crawford. Unfortunately, rather than giving us a glimpse into little-known facts about her life, this book was little more than a filmography. If I really wanted to know the details of every film Joan has ever done, I would just look it up online. It becomes apparent early on that Spoto is a huge Joan apologist as he takes every effort to slam Mommie Dearest. Not that I necessarily believe that Mommie Dearest is an accurate portrayal of life in the Crawford home, but after awhile it's like "Okay, we get it Donald. You don't like Mommie Dearest." Unless Joan's filmography is of great interest to you, I would recommend you skip this book. Unfortunately this is the first Crawford biography I've read so I don't have any recommendations for better alternatives. less

Too objective for my taste. He slammed "Mommie Dearest", therefore he lost a star.

The book was not a Joan basher. It told what a thoughtful woman she was, i liked.
