review 1: Donna VanLiere's "The Christmas Journey" is a very quick if yet unnecessary book that retells in an abbreviated form the story of Mary & Joseph's trip to Bethlehem & the birth of Christ. In very short fashion the book goes into a bit more detail about what the actual emotions that both experienced up to the point of the arrival of their new baby & reminds we the reader that this event was about as normal as it could be despite other writings to the contrary. There is also a long preface & introduction to the book that's nearly as long as the story that goes into a bit too much detail from the author as to why this book was written in the first place. The illustrations are fine & VanLiere's story is fine as well as being biblical accurate, but disappointing to me as a reade... morer due to the overtly long intro & the fact that is somewhat stops right after Mary gives birth & goes no further. Buy this book only at a discount since it's not worth full price for this retelling of the Nativity story.
review 2: This is the retelling of the story of the birth of Christ. It is told in a manner to help us understand the discomfort and pain that Mary went through. The book gives the story from the Bible in the beginning then retells it in a more modern way.I like this. Sometimes it is easy to whitewash over the pain and the fact that Jesus was born in a barn. This brings to life the reality part. The pain, the smells and the lack of simple comforts. I will remember this retelling of a very familiar story. less
