review 1: I borrowed this book from the fiction reserve stock section of Lancashire library. It was an extremely old copy, well read, with ochre nibble-edged pages worn as soft as old, well-washed cotton. I was obliged to handle it carefully, fearful that it would finally disintegrate. All of which detracted not at all from the sheer joy of reading finely wrought prose describing a pre-war dysfunctional family. The close observation of human nature at its best and worst was masterly. The depiction of a patriarchal society during its dying days, just before the second world war released many women from the tyranny of male oppression and financial and legally imposed dependence, was inspired. Why didn't I know about Dorothy Whipple before now? Celebrity authors who brag that they have... more 'written a book' should get a copy of They Were Sisters, read it and blush.
review 2: Story follows three English sisters in their married lives, each with very different relationships. Lucy, the eldest is in a very loving and committed marriage although, sadly for them, childless, and is the "go to girl" for the others and their children. Wonderful weaving of story lines showing the tragic effects of defective character traits in some people and the impact on other family members. Auntie Lucy remains the loving helper throughout to any and all who need her. Good take on defective marriage and a compelling read for me. I want to read more of this old author. less
