review 1: okay. i don't think there's a combination of words that i can fumble together to really convey my thoughts and feelings having read 'Suicide'. but i'll try...i think that it's entirely reasonable for Levé to want to write this book whilst reflecting on his friend's choice to commit suicide. but i think it's distressing to know that not two weeks after finishing it and handing in the manuscript, that he had decided to take his own life.i would like to say, the majority of the book is a fictional recountment of his friend's normal and mundane life. dispersed through the fiction is Levé wanting answers and having a sort of dialogue with himself and at times with (what he perceives as) his late friend. i think it's those thoughts that are worth reading.
review 2:
... more I love this book, but not in a enthusiastic way. I love this book in a tender way, on a personal level. I never felt this way about a book. This might just be my favorite book and it has nothing to do with what I would think makes a good book, a good book. It feels very odd to read a book addressed to someone who's so similar to me, I forget the author is writing to someone else. Sometimes I find myself so caught up in what I'm reading because it feels like a posthumous, intimate conversation with someone who has never met me, yet knows so much about me. Considering there is mystery if this friend actually existed, maybe he is capable of capturing depression accurately enough for me to relate to most of his friend's personality traits and behavior. Nevertheless, it could very well be a narrative inspired by his own feelings and personality. Sometimes he goes in such depth about that person, I'm not sure if that is fruit of years of morbid fantasizing about his friend, or if it's indeed a fictional piece inspired on himself, thus that's how he understands it so well, knows more than anybody else would normally know about a friend. Anyway, I don't know if I would recommend it to anyone, on those grounds, but it's the kind of book I will read more than once. less
