review 1: I kept putting this one off because DFW is my favorite author and I didn't want it to change my personal relationship with his work. I was worried it would cash in on the post humous life of David Foster Wallace which has been so overdone and sadly misrepresents the author's literary merit as this dark yet heroic myth. But I loved learning about him, as biased or not as Max may have been. I was more interested in learning about DFW's process of writing rather than his actual life. Max's writing was very approachable and modest, which allowed me to look into DFW as a mere mortal, living a life outside the chronology of his writings, which is something readers often forget about writers. I don't feel like it will taint my relationship with DFW's works.
review 2:
... moreA fairly good introduction into the life and mind of an incredible author. While it probably won't satisfy those who are intimately familiar with Wallace's life and works, those who are new to Wallace will certainly benefit from this bio. The biggest problem I had with the book is that it seemed fairly rushed at times, particularly Max's description of the last 10-12 years of Wallace's life. As many reviewers have noted, the flow of the book is, at times, reminiscent to a very lengthy wiki article - simply a statement of facts without really delving into the deeper aspects of Wallace's life and thought. Despite its shortcomings, "Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story" gives a fairly nice overview of Wallace's life and serves as a good introduction to his ideas. less
