Mark Matthews scored over 2,000 points at Fort Myers High School. On Saturday, he announced that he was transferring to Florida Gulf Coast, returning to his hometown of Fort Myers in the process.
FORT MYERS, Fl. — Mark Matthews was once a heralded high school recruit at Fort Myers High School, scoring over 2,000 points during his high school career.
Now, after two years, the 6’6” shooting guard is returning to the city where it all began for him.
The native of Fort Myers announced on Saturday that he was transferring to his hometown team, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, becoming the member of Dunk City in the process.
Out of high school, the Eagles heavily pursued Matthews on the recruiting trail. Ultimately, he committed to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, where he played one season before transferring.
Matthews averaged 3.3 points and 1.6 rebounds in just under nine minutes of court time per game with the Seahawks as a freshman back in the 2015-16 season. Following the year, he announced he was transferring, and eventually committed to the USC Aiken Pacers.
There, Matthews put his full arsenal of talents on display, helping lead the Pacers to an 18-win season, which tripled their total from the previous season (six).
He went on to average 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game at the Division II level. Matthews set a school record with 23 rebounds in a game against St. Andrews.
He also scored 22 points and dished out five assists in the same game.
In Matthews, the Eagles get a guard who brings size and a sheer knack for scoring the basketball. He will boost the team’s offense when he becomes eligible in the 2018-19 season, as he will sit out this season due to transfer regulations.
At the time, Florida Gulf Coast doesn’t have an available scholarship. In an article posted by Scout.com, it was noted that Matthews has spoken with coaches and team administration about working towards a scholarship down the road as one becomes available.
