review 1: I thought this book was very interesting, but I didn't love it. I enjoyed learning about the time period and what happened to the brides, but I struggled with the book structure and the lack of compassion with 90% of it's characters. I know it was supposed to be realistic and I applaud that, but with over 60,000 war brides, there had to be some stories with more compassion in them. The characters were interesting, mostly because they were real, with a few exceptions. The scenes and social issues were well represented. I would recommend it to people who like the time period and can handle serious and sometimes depressing life issues, but I would recommend using a 3x5 card as a bookmark and writing the names of the brides and their background info to help you keep ... morethem straight as you read.
review 2: This book depicts the real stories of four British women who fell in love with American GIs during WW2 and followed them to America after the war ended. Sylvia, Rae, Margaret, and Lyn are all remarkable women who survived a crushing Blitz, then went and uprooted themselves to a completely alien world. One ends up in California, one Baltimore, one Georgia, and the other Iowa. Although their stories are different, they all came together through GI bride organizations to create a community of friendship and support. I loved reading their stories, sharing their struggles, and rejoicing in their triumphs. One of the best books I've read focusing on WW2 because of its easy, narrative writing style and I really enjoyed seeing the war and what followed from this more unique perspective. less
