review 1: Aj and Dray are lovers. Dray is a professional basketball player and Aj is an interior designer. When Dray is drafted to play for the Hornets, he moves Aj to New Orleans with him so they can be close. The problem is that Dray wants to keep their relationship on the down-low because he doesn't want people, especially his father to find out he is gay. To cover up his relationship to Aj, he marries a white woman. Aj has a best friend named Maurice who lives in Atlanta. He doesn't know about Aj's relationship with Dray. Aj befriends a woman named Jade while living in New Orleans. She does facials and massages, sometimes going to clients' homes to do her work. Aj's mother and sister live in his hometown, North Carolina. Aj and Dray carry on a secret affair while he's ... moremarried. Sometimes not seeing each other for days or weeks. Dray is taking care of Aj financially and sometimes will send for him when he has his games on the road. Both begin getting threats to reveal their relationship if they don't pay the blackmailer a large sum of money. The threats first begin with Dray. He pays them, hoping the blackmailer will go away. Then Aj begins getting threats but doesn't tell Dray about it. Dray spends so much time pleasing his wife and keeping things a secret. Aj has a personal trainer named Cisco who was hired by Dray. Actually his cousin recommended him. At first they thought he was the blackmailer because he found out about the two. Dray's wife gets pregnant which upsets Aj. But he continues to see Dray. His blackmailer request money and for him to leave town and leave Dray alone. The blackmailer turned out to be Maurice and, along with Dray's wife Judy, were trying to run Aj away from Dray. In the end, Dray ended up divorcing Judy and Maurice was sent to prison for other blackmailings and illegal activity. Aj gave Dray and ultimatum prior to all this but, ended up leaving him. Dray never new about Judy's involvement in Aj leaving and going back home.
review 2: Quick read and entertaining but certainly not my favorite E Lynn Harris book. What I liked is the love story could have been interchanged with a man and women. What I didn't like was the predictability of the book and the glamorizing of the "kept" woman situation. I would of liked the wife to be of good character. It was too easy to make her a cheating gold digger. And would have liked to see the main character have more angst over his position and his choices. The book had the potential to be so much more especially with this subject but misses the mark. less
