review 1: This short-story called O Mandarim is about the perpetual dilemma if, lest it is possible, you would kill someone in order to gain all of her/his money.The central character here is Teodoro who receives a book with a ring-bell that is capable of giving him all the wealth of a close-to-death mandarin in China if he taps the bell. After a persuasive discussion with a mysterious man that appeared, out of nowhere, in his house Teodoro decides to tap the bell. That's when the real story begins and Teodoro is now one of the wealthiest people of the country and, if not the one, one of the most powerful and influential.The problem is that he now starts regretting what he has done as it begins to dawn on him what happened to China and the old Mandarin's family: misery. Also, wherev... moreer he goes, the ghost of the old dead mandarin is always appearing to him...The story is very well written and although it does not gives us a real perception of Eça's quality as a writter and what type of writter he is, it is very entertaining.Also it is very fun to read the descriptions of the different characters and the different places Teodoro visits. Plus, the constant change of Teodoro's objectives is really entertaining.On the contrary the fact that the end of the book is not so much a real end is a negative point, in my opinion. However this point is offset by the fact that the end is a kind of lesson for us all, a moral that should be present in the way we live our lives.So overall the book is well written and interesting, with the bonus of having a useful and truthful message. Yet it is not an extraordinary or exceptional one, it is one you can read if you are searching for an entertaining book.
review 2: Esta obra no creo que sea el mejor ejemplo para conocer a Eça de Queirós. El autor famoso por su obra naturalista, e inclusive realista, en esta entrega toma partido por el relato fantástico, por la pesadilla, no sin dejar de lado descripciones detalladas de la arquitectura y de los modos «diplomáticos» con que se mueven los funcionarios.El relato funciona de pe a pa. El planteamiento que en apariencia no ofrece sorpresas nos depara desde las primeras páginas que no será una novela costumbrista, no. Una vez entra en escena el Diablo, todo se desencadena con soltura y un tanto predecible.Teodoro, narrador y protagonista, es un pobre diablo, un burócrata, un achichincle, ninguneado y jodido. ¿Qué desea? Lo que todo pusilánime: riqueza, poder, dominio. Mujeres, manjares. Nada nuevo pues.Novela paternalista, fruto del realismo del siglo XIX sólo que instalada en la perspectiva fantástica, deudora un poco del antiromanticismo de la época, pero, desde un frente más cercano a este: la ensoñación, el alucine. Personajes muy bien dibujados, para esto Eça de Queirós es un maestro. Su prosa es bella, trabajada, concisa. No da vueltas ni gira en redondo, más bien va formando bucles que se expanden y retraen conforme el relato avanza, un relato, un tanto predecible a cachos y en otros no.Su brevedad la rescata, leerla puede ser una tarea de una tarde, pero, sus palabras, su música queda resonando por más tiempo. Van y vienen. El empleo de la sonoridad de las imágenes es cautivante, pero, algo falta al final. Hay un dejo de... ausencia. Algo falta, nada sobra.Definitivamente es un autor al que tengo que leer un poco más. Al menos sus obras «más representativas» El primo Basilo, El crimen del padre Amaro, o Los Maia. less
