review 1: Even most hardcore baseball fans' knowledge of the sport does not extend back before the early 20th century - the Black Sox scandal, the Cubs consecutive World Series pennants, Ty Cobb's early days. Yet by that point, baseball had already been played in America for over 50 years, and in fact had bounced back from a period in the 1870s when the game appeared to be just a passing fad mired in corruption that the public would soon forget. What saved "base ball" was the creation of a new league in 1881 to compete against the National League, the World Series fervor that swept the country, and the motley crew of colorful athletes, owners, managers, umpires, and reporters that participated in the first few races to the pennant. (Oh, and unrestricted liquor sales in the ballpa... morerks - particularly for the ultra-wet St. Louis Browns - didn't hurt either.) I found this book enjoyable but not quite as well written as other books about the early days of the sport, particularly Crazy '08.
review 2: Before the baseball we know.... Before Bonds, before Aaron, before the Babe...baseball was a very different game from what we know. A fledgling sport trying to free itself from the grips of gamblers, "Summer of Beer and Whiskey" takes us through the 1883 season of the American Association. The book paints a vivid picture of not just the sport of that era, but life in general. While the season as a whole was fun to follow, I found it somewhat difficult to follow or keep track the dozens of players on the 6 teams of the league. less
