review 1: This is a great book of popular history of science. By depicting the social, cultural, and religious background of the 17th centuries first, Dolnick gradually introduces to the readers the famous great figures in the history of science of the 17th century. With numerous anecdotes and vivid quotations, the century of the great scientific discoveries relives itself like a drama to the readers. I especially likes his stressing on the influence of the religion from time to time. It reminds the readers again and again the importance of Verstehen.
review 2: Interesting enough, generally concerned with the rise of science by men who fervently believed in God and wanted to prove His mathematical perfection, but, by establishing the scientific/experimental method an
... mored forming the Royal Society, helped pave the way to diminishing the centrality and necessity for God in the formation and maintenance of the natural world. Good enough, but the book is all over the place, unnecessarily digressing into details of the theories and work of Kepler, Galileo, Leibniz, Newton, and others, when Understanding the Implications and response to the work might have been more important. This appears to be an overview, but a bit disjointed. less
