review 1: This was a light, fun read and exactly what I needed, having been involved for years in a bookclub based on novels which have won literary prizes. It does a swift job of ridiculing the agenda-based machinations of a ludicrous selection committee for a thinly disguised Booker Prize. The examples of the writing presented in these fabricated novels being nominated are truly funny, but probably more so for anyone who's spent a long time reading scores of novels, both good and not so good. St. Aubyn's book is a nice corrective for anyone who thinks literary awards are completely without concerns other than fine literature. I enjoyed this book thoroughly.
review 2: I knew (from interviews) that this book would be a tad different from his previous books so I wasn't as
... more disappointed as some others were when it didn't match up in certain ways to the Patrick Melrose novels. It was great fun but I wanted it to be longer and more involved. For my money, he is the finest writer in English anywhere in the world. I have read everything he has written and would recommend any of his books to anyone who appreciates fine writing and sophisticated humor. I can't think of anyone who comes close in his brilliant use of language except maybe T.C. Boyle, but after you read St. Aubyn and then read Boyle, the American's work seems a little thin (probably due to St. Aubyn's excellent education in two languages). less

Very 'British'...witty, clever...self-obsessed characters...a fun quick read.
