review 1: I don't know what I expected when I picked up St Aubyn's books but it certainly wasn't what they actually are so I had to put them down and let some time pass before I could come at them with the right frame of mind. St Aubyn's characters and situations are unspeakably sad. I am not sure where the alleged humor is that is supposed to lighten or make palatable the interpersonal carnage that takes place in this book. This first book is written with guts and passion but much less art than the second. I can't say I am enjoying reading these books but I can't stop. I am hoping I will find out there's been a larger point aside from the obvious therapeutic truth-telling St Aubyn needed to do.

Patrick is a child (5) in this first one and it is mostly about his father and his horrible behavior. But it also covers a few other people in their life. less
