review 1: I fall in love with places much easier than I fall in love with people so this novel was very appealing to me as it was about the place that is Ville Rose, a Hatian fishing village, as much as it was the people who live there. Danticat is a masterful artist who weaves the story from the perspective of different characters into a beautiful tapestry of life and grief and hope. The story unfolds through independent experiences and observations much like we learn about our friends and neighbors in real life. Meticulous and lyrical writing to fall in love with. A must read for the literary-minded.
review 2: I would call this an island story where many of the lives of these Haitians are interwoven as their personal stories unfold. The novel opens with everyone look
... moreing for Claire, a seven year old girl who disappears after her birthday party. Her father, a widower, is about to give her away to a woman of means who he thinks can give her a better life. As everyone is looking for Claire, a series of events and stories are happening simultaneously. The subplots include tragedies such as murders, cover-ups, attempted suicides and radio exposures as readers hold their breath to see if Claire will reappear and face her life. less
