Dragon Slayer of Trondheim
review 1: Lottie Thorskard, the most famous dragon slayer in Canada (and maybe the world), has been injured fighting a dragon outside of Toronto. She has made the decision to move her and her family to Trondheim, a small town that has not had it's own dragon slayer and has had to rely on one arriving from one of the more populated areas when needed. Owen, Lottie's nephew and dragon slayer-in-training, has moved with her to Trondheim. On his first day of school, he meets our storyteller, Siobhan. Siobhan loves composing and playing music. Her parents, however, don't take her music very seriously and think she needs to study something "more useful." So begins our story of this alternate reality world in which dragons are real and dragon slayers are an important part of society. ... more As Lottie tries to change the world's view of dragon slayers, she and Owen enlist Siobhan's aid to help tell Owen's story as his bard. Johnston does an excellent job of world-building and history twisting to make this story believable.
review 2: Better review later- really fun adventure tale set in alternate Canada where dragons are a constant threat-drawn to carbon emissions. First in a series. Nice mix of female narrator- she is musical and becomes Owen's bard, and male hero- teen Owen is charming, unassuming and will appeal to male and female readers. Hints of romance in future, but not w narrator. Big pluses- humor, and Owen's non traditional family- raised by dad and Aunt and her lesbian partner. Aunt is legendary dragon hunter, partner is sword maker, dad less legendary dragon hunter, a scent mom is Venezuelan dragon hunter. Lots of action. less

This was a really quick, easy read. It was so fun to read a book set in Huron county!
