review 1: This is another nicely-spun fantasy novel in the Pathfinder series. It is the tale of two unlikely partners, a barbarian maiden and a young wizard with a unique map-making ability, united in their search for lost loved ones. There was a good number of twists in the plot that kept the story interesting. Though the ending wasn't "epic" it made sense and was fitting to the overall story. I'm growing to really love these books in the Pathfinders series. They are great one-shot fantasy stories that feel epic without growing into unending multi-volume tales.
review 2: A very solid fantasy romp, which is no surprise from Elaine Cunningham, whose Forgotten Realms work has always been a good read. Cunningham is very good at creating interesting characters, managing plot
... more and action, and telling a good yarn. This book is set in the Pathfinder world, and Cunningham has always been pretty comfortable in working that kind of shared world environment and utilizing a backdrop that isn't her own to good effect. But in her previous efforts, she was working in a world that was significantly better known and more thoroughly realized. As a result, there are some assumptions made for the world that probably shouldn't be and a little less time developing the backdrop than should be. It's not a major flaw, but it is a little endemic for Pathfinder, both as a backdrop for novels and as a campaign world for the RPG. Frankly, this is a problem most RPGs experience with new settings these days, whether they were drawn from a designer's home campaign or not. One of the reasons the Forgotten Realms worked so well was much more than Ed Greenwood wrote a serious and deep treatment of the world, or had gamed in it for a long time. It was that before it had ever become printed as a campaign world it had been featured for years and years in Dragon magazine article. It wasn't just one package attempting to examine the entire thing. And when you only run out a couple of books to describe the whole smash and detail out the culture, you miss a lot.But I digress. Cunningham has written a nice fantasy story here, but it's fairly light and one of the reasons is the foundation it's written on is also light. Pathfinder isn't quite ready for a lot of shared world stories right now and needs a lot more depth for this sort of story to have a stronger foundation. I like the characters and the work, but it's not quite as good as her earlier Realms work, but not really through any fault of Cunningham's. less

Your average setting fantasy. Not an unpleasant read, but the main characters felt a bit incomplete.
