review 1: Burning is a very unique story about a boy who just graduated from high school name Ben, and a gypsy girl named Lala. Lala's family does fortune telling and one day Ben's friends drag him along to a reading. Ben immediately falls in love with Lala, the only problem is that she is engaged to be married. In gypsy families, the parents pick who their children are to marry and if the child refuses, this causes the family much embarrassment. Ben asks Lala out and she refuses, then another time and she refuses. Finally one day when Lala and her family are shopping, Lala sneaks out of the store and Ben is there waiting on his motorcycle. They ride down to the river and they go swimming. Then Lala's family including her fiancé finds them her fiancé Romeo, her dad, and Romeos bro... morether start to hit and kick Ben leaving him with a concussion. Lala and Ben's friends Hogboy and Pete take him home and take care of him. Then Lala and Ben have physical action. In the end, since Lala is no longer apart of her gypsy family and Ben is leaving for college, they decide to go their separate ways. Ben begs Lala to stay with him for protection but she simply answers "I am not your responsibility Ben." Then Lala leaves, free of being a gypsy. I loved this book because it was unique. It was interesting to learn about the gypsy ways as well. I loved the romance between Lala an Ben because they are so different but when they are together, they couldn't be more alike.
review 2: Wow--I really liked this one--it's an unusual YA read-- a coming of age story told from the perspective of an all American boy, dealing with all American problems and a Gypsy girl-- living a very traditional Gypsy upbringing--two people who couldn't be more different yet still alike in so many ways. The romance kept me reading but I also really liked the ending. And I liked how though it seemed to start out more as Ben's story, by the end it was more Lala's journey that impressed me. Thank you, Racquel from The Book Barbie's for this recommendation:)) less

The love story was pretty YA (a bit cheesy) but I liked the glimpse into Gypsy culture.
