review 1: I liked this novel, though did not love it. While it was set in post apocalyptic time in the Great Lakes area, it was still hard to figure out where they were. The novel dealt with the same historical patterns of new civilization rising after a loss of the old, inner political conflict and crime and the need for the few to control the mass, all for their own financial and power gain. However, it was too slow moving with characters jumping all over the place, it just seemed disjointed. The story line was good, but the character development could have been a bit stronger and deeper.
review 2: Remember that old ad campaign for Reeses Peanut Butter Cups? Well, the version for this book would be "You got your murder mystery in my post apocalyptic science fiction
... more!" "No! You got your Post apocalyptic science fiction in my murder mystery!" A creamy delicious delight it is however. Melancholy hero, in the best tradition of inadvertent, involuntary detectives, and lovingly developed new world. I highly recommend it and hope Mr. Pattison decides to write more. less
