review 1: Love the heroine. My favorite in the series. There were parts in the book which left me teary-eyed. The struggles of the character of Ethan was touching. He was a man who lacks a loving family but found it in Lily. Lily on the other hand is very hesitant to give her heart knowing how huge her dowry was and probably the only thing that drew Ethan to her. The ending has an interesting revelation. My chest had constrictions. Love Lily's strength and Ethan's quiet dignity. One of my favorites!
review 2: I wibbled on my ratings - this straddles the 3 and 4 star category in my mind. The characters are fabulous and there's some interesting background on many levels. Ethan and Lily, however, are sometimes overshadowed by the melodramatic situations in which they're eng
... moreulfed, especially Ethan with his mountains of debt, his aspiring, scheming mistress and his secretive relationship with Vanessa (an interesting character but used to bad effect at times in separating the hero and heroine). Money is a huge obstacle in their relationship - Ethan's debts and Lily's fortune (albeit closely tied-up by her father) makes for the most interesting challenges to their relationship.Several threads were left dangling - there's a social climbing fellow who buys up Ethan's properties supposedly because of a huge chip on his shoulder about the hero. Yet nothing really comes of this at the end. Ditto for the unseen father of the hero who's mentioned a time or two but never even seems to figure in the complications you'd expect from a titled nobleman on his son's marriage, however strained their relationship. That said, if you love your angst, this is the romance for you. Ethan and Lily face a boatload of obstacles, many self-inflicted, on their way to true love. Ethan's admiration for Lily is a steadfast centre in the book, though. I only wish she saw more of his good qualities earlier on in their story. Ethan's aspiring mistress is the worst character in the book from being a stock villain. The leads, Vanessa and Lily's parents are the most-fully fleshed characters in the story - I was pleased at how sympathetically the book turns Lily's dismissive view of her mother around. less
