review 1: A fun read, a good continuation of the last book. Pretty ticked about the ending-- clearly meant to continue into a third book, but no third book published. Not even funny. I actually read the first one not realizing it was a series, but then finding out it didn't even get to finish I feel rather cheated. Hopefully they will finish it eventually? Shakespeare, this is not, but it was fun and exciting and reasonably clever, and more engaging than a lot of fantasy books. I am sad to say you should probably not get into it, just because of that darned lack of ending!
review 2: i initially gave this 4 stars, but i think this is actually a 3.5-ish for me. though i had a great time reading it because of bunce's skill for unraveling a good mystery and digger was
... more still really great, it did suffer from middle book syndrome. mostly it included all the characters i didn't really care about while all my favorites were conspicuously absent (could we at least have gotten more letters from meri?), even if there were a handful of newbies i was pretty fond of. this makes the fact that we don't get a third book even WORSE, since they obviously would have been back to the forefront. i liked how the mystery plot dealt with the nuanced effects of war on a lot of different fronts though (though the offscreen conclusion of the war was a little weird), and as i said before i really enjoyed reading it? i'm just distressed this isn't going to get the conclusion it deserves because of the ways i wasn't into this installment. less
